The Widow Arrives

This page is community education. It is not legal, medical, funding, eligibility, or care-planning advice.

What follows is everything from the episode, written down — so you can read it slowly, and so you have the phone numbers and the forms in front of you when you need them.

What Changes

Four things move when a spouse dies.

  • Her own Old Age Security continues. It was never his.
  • The Guaranteed Income Supplement is recalculated — it is income-tested, and she is now counted as one person rather than two.
  • The Canada Pension Plan survivor's pension must be applied for. Nobody sends it.
  • The Alberta Seniors Benefit is reassessed — and Alberta has to be told separately.

There is no Old Age Security survivor's pension. That one does not exist — and the silence about it is what blindsides families.

Resource 1

Tell Them in This Order

Three notifications, then the applications. They do not tell each other — and the order matters, because the applications come after the notifications.

1

Service Canada

One notification covers his CPP, his Old Age Security, and his Guaranteed Income Supplement.

You do not need the death certificate. Proof of the date of death is only needed if they ask for it. A certificate can take weeks — do not wait while payments keep arriving.

If the phone line says they are too busy, that is not a closed door. There is no online way to report a death, so the website cannot help. You can mail a signed letter, or go in person. Both count.

A signed letter needs: the deceased's full name, date of birth, date of death, marital status at death, Social Insurance Number, and address at death — plus the name and contact details of the estate or the person handling their affairs, and your own name and relationship.

2

The Canada Revenue Agency

Telling Service Canada does not tell CRA. They are different departments, and each has to be told.

Notifying CRA of the death, and registering as the legal representative, are two separate steps. Both are needed.

CRA does need proof — but a funeral director's statement of death is accepted in place of a death certificate, along with a document naming the executor. Most families already have the statement. Registration takes about 28 business days.

Alberta Vital Statistics may already have told CRA, through the medical certificate of death completed so the burial could proceed. But nothing tells you that it happened. One phone call settles it.

3

Alberta

The Alberta Seniors Benefit is a provincial programme. Telling CRA does nothing for it. Ottawa does not tell Edmonton.

Call Alberta Supports at 1-877-644-9992 when marital status changes.

4

Then the applications

The survivor's pension. Apply as soon as you can — back payments reach only twelve months, and every month of delay beyond that is gone permanently. If you already receive your own CPP, the two are combined and capped: you will not receive both in full.

The death benefit. Please read the section below before you claim it.

Resource 2 · The Rule Families Get Wrong

One Payment You Send Back. One You Keep.

These two rules point in opposite directions, and families who learn only the first one give back money they were entitled to keep.

↩ Federal — send it back

CPP, Old Age Security and GIS are payable for the month of death. Anything arriving after that has to be returned.

Call the bank as well and ask them to return post-death deposits to the sender. The bank can do this without waiting for Service Canada — which stops the amount growing.

✓ Alberta — keep it

The Alberta Seniors Benefit ends the month after the death. That payment is legitimately payable and is not an overpayment.

Do not return it. Confirmed with Alberta Seniors Financial Assistance, August 2026.

Resource 3 · Please Read This Part

The Death Benefit — Where You Claim It Matters

The Canada Pension Plan death benefit is a one-time payment to the estate. The executor should apply within 60 days. Unlike the death notification, it can be applied for online.

⚠ Where it is claimed for tax is a choice — and that choice can change your other benefits.

If an estate tax return is being filed, the death benefit is reported there. If it is the only estate income and no estate return is otherwise needed, the person who received it may report it on their own return instead.

Tax offices answer tax questions. They are not looking at your Guaranteed Income Supplement, your Alberta Seniors Benefit, or your AISH.

One widow was correctly advised to claim it on her own return. It was correct for tax — and it raised her income enough that her Guaranteed Income Supplement was cut by $400 a month.

Ask the benefits office the benefits question before you file. If you receive AISH, tell your AISH worker — reporting changes is a requirement, not a courtesy.

💵

If $5,000 arrives, do not treat the second half as certain

For deaths on or after January 1, 2025, the death benefit may include a top-up — but only where the person never received a CPP retirement or disability pension and left no spouse eligible for a survivor's pension. Most seniors who were drawing CPP do not qualify on the first test alone.

And where the top-up is paid, Service Canada states that if an entitlement is later determined, or a survivor's benefit becomes payable, the top-up becomes an overpayment requiring recovery.

A note on amounts and names. Benefit amounts change every three months, and programme names change too. Nothing in the video names a dollar figure, for that reason. Episode 2 — A Door of Her Own

The house is too big, and the city is too far from her daughter. Episode 2 follows Sitt Nour into subsidised seniors housing — how the wait works, what she gives up and what she gains, and the supports that sit underneath it: the housing subsidy and how rent is calculated, the Alberta Seniors Benefit as a standing programme, Special Needs Assistance, and Alberta Aids to Daily Living.
