Things families often ask.
Is this program free?
Yes. Our current education sessions, online resources, and written materials are free to access. If anything changes in the future, we will make that clear before anyone registers or attends.
Do I have to speak English to attend?
No. Sessions are primarily delivered in English, with language support arranged where available in Arabic, Somali, Urdu, Amharic, and Oromo. We are developing written resource guides in English, Arabic, Somali, Urdu, Amharic, and Oromo. You are welcome to ask questions and participate in the language you are most comfortable using.
Is this legal advice?
No. Knowing Your Rights is a community education program. We provide plain-language education about Alberta home care rights, continuing care standards, program rules, complaint pathways, and questions families can ask. We are not lawyers and do not provide legal advice for specific situations. If your situation may require legal advice, we can point you toward public legal-information resources or community legal clinics where available.
My parent needs home care right now. Can you help?
We provide public education, not emergency help, care planning, case management, or direct home care services. If your parent needs home and community care in Alberta, the public starting point is to call Health Link at 811 and ask how to arrange an assessment. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. Our education materials explain what families can ask about during the assessment process.
Can our masjid host a session?
We would be honoured to discuss it. Knowing Your Rights is designed to be offered through existing masjid gatherings, senior circles, and community education spaces where available. Please reach out using the form above or call 780 782 6856, and we can discuss whether a session may be a good fit for your community.
I am a caregiver — is this program for me too?
Yes. The program includes education for paid caregivers about workplace safety rights and responsibilities that may apply under Alberta law, including the right to refuse dangerous work where a worker reasonably believes there is an undue hazard. Employment, privacy, and workplace-safety obligations can depend on the caregiver’s work arrangement, the issue, and the law or standard that applies. Many caregivers, including immigrant women and Muslim caregivers in our communities, benefit from plain-language safety education. You belong in this program.
"No question is too small. Some situations need professional help, but everyone deserves clear information about where to start. We are here to help families learn what to ask, what to document, and where to turn next."
